The Vallarta Cup Race Series

By Haydé Escalante
One of the many reason we love January in Vallarta-Nayarit is the the Vallarta Cup Races. There couldn’t be a better way for lovers of sailing and the sea to kick off 2014. Now in its 7th edition, the reloaded and improved Cup is a series of Saturday races – Jan. 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th– organized to challenge the sailing skills of all boat owners, sailors and trained athletes.

Official organizer The Vallarta Yacht Club added several activities alongside the races; for example, classes for navigating racing boats and cruising boats. For those who just want to have some afternoon fun enjoying a great activity, the Club is also offering classes for beginners to learn how to sail on beautiful Banderas Bay.
The boats sail from the Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta, the La Cruz Marina and the Marina in Puerto Vallarta. The sailors are mainly local, but there are participants from outside of Vallarta-Nayarit as well. This year the Cup has also opened a Juniors category, giving younger sailors the opportunity to compete in races as well. The idea came after the committee agreed to really start encouraging sailing as a social activity in the region.

Although the event has already started, you can still register for upcoming races. The Club also offers a special dinner after the race at the Paradise Village Marina, with different themes for each Saturday. Saturday January 18th  you’ll hear The Rhythm Roosters and to finish it all off, the awards night on the 25th will feature Latin Music.
Don’t miss out on this event next weekend. Enjoy the beautiful sunset while having fun with family and friends. And if you are on vacation in the region, this is such a great way to start feeling the vibe of living in paradise.
