Releasing Baby Sea Turtles in Puerto Vallarta
By Verónica Toro / Translated by Nyima Bieber
The ideal season for releasing baby sea turtles in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit is between the months of July and December, although the opportunity often presents itself outside of this period of time. It is one of the most popular and anticipated events in the area, for locals and tourists alike.
It’s not just an educational and cultural activity in which you can learn a great deal about these marine creatures- this is an emotional journey as well! Here you are contributing to a good cause, and it’s amazing to see the newborn turtles making such an effort to reach the sea and embark on what will be their journey and fight for survival. Of every 1000 turtles, just 5% will reach adulthood; this creates a very different perception of the species, which unfortunately is in danger of extinction.
The current conservation endeavors are carried out with respect for the place that the female turtles choose to lay their eggs. They are cared for from the moment they are deposited on the beaches until they hatch, and up until the time of their release into the sea.
Even if it’s just once, participating in such a satisfactory and special experience is truly worth your time!
