Dear Friend of Mexico,

Mexico ranks tenth as an international travel destination in the world and is the number one international tourism destination for North Americans traveling abroad. Many tourists to Mexico are repeat visitors, returning to our beautiful country because of their positive experiences and lasting memories of a satisfying and secure visit.

A further sign of seasoned travelers confidence that travelling to established resorts in Mexico is the preferred destination is revealed in the strength of hotel occupancy in our popular Velas Resorts destinations. A report from the Secretary of Tourism dated February 2009, shows the following: Riviera Maya’s occupancy at 85% and the Puerto Vallarta area occupancy at 78%.

Reports of drug violence refer mostly to isolated incidences that have taken place in a few border cities and have not affected the decision of millions of tourists to travel to Mexico. More than 22.6 million international tourists visited Mexico in 2008 representing a 5.9 percent increase compared to 2007.

Visitors to any destination in the world should of course exercise common sense, and the same holds true when traveling to Mexico. Be sure that you follow the same safety habits that you would follow in any destination, remembering that caution is always considered prudent when traveling to unfamiliar locales.
