Tucked away in the Sierra Madre Mountains of central Mexico is one of the most pristine gardens in all of North America. Jardín Botánico Vallarta (Vallarta Botanical Gardens) welcomes nature-lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone looking for a unique place to unwind, just 30 minutes south of Old Town PV.
A Mountainside Tropical Oasis
Scenically set upon a mountainside, the expansive gardens are host to a great many ways to soak in the sights. Numerous jungle trails wind through lush exhibits, as 200+ species of exotic birds sing overhead. Whether alone or on the 1pm Guided Tour (December-April), visitors can take in the gorgeous plants and aromas of the Vanilla, Tropical Plant, and Rhododendron Houses, as well as the largest public Orchid Conservatory in all of Mexico. After all this, you may wish to dive into the Crystal Pools of the Rio Horcones before a complimentary hibiscus tea in the balcony restaurant. Speaking of which, don’t miss out on favorites like the Tortilla Soup, Avocado Salad, Botanical Nachos, Fish / Shrimp Tacos, or Chilaquiles with Eggs.
What to Bring With You
It’s a good idea to bring your own sunscreen, water, and insect repellent (long pants and a long-sleeve shirt work well for sun and bug protection as well). You’ll also want to pack a swimsuit and towel in case you plan on swimming. And don’t forget to wear comfortable pair of hiking / walking shoes.
Catch the Bus in Old Town
Getting to the Gardens is fast (30mins), easy, and affordable ($20 MXN / $1.50 USD each way). Simply catch the bus to “El Tuito” at the corner of Carranza and Agaucate in the Romantic Zone (Old Town). If you prefer a taxi, they range from $120-$650 MXN, depending where you get picked up.
