Welcome to the Friendly Fishing Village of Lo de Marcos
Just an hour north of Puerto Vallarta sits this idyllic Riviera Nayarit fishing village. From its immaculate town square and sleepy streets that come alive at sunset to more than a mile of the most pristine beaches on Mexico’s west coast, it’s a wonder the place remains so quiet. In fact, many visitors joke that it’s the “worst place in the country” so crowds of out-of-towners won’t come and spoil it.

This is a hard thing to measure, as you really can’t go wrong in the sand and sun of the Riviera. However, the glistening majesty of Playa Los Venados is absolutely sublime. Hidden away in a cove through the jungle south of town, here you’ll find a practically desolate stretch with a family-owned restaurant serving oysters pulled right from the water. The more popular Playa Lo de Marcos is dreamy as well, featuring an estuary suited to surfers and experienced swimmers to the north, with tide pools and calm waters around “El Atracadero” dock for wading, snorkeling, and paddleboarding on the southern end.
Where to Eat
Roasted corn, grilled seafood, fresh flour tortillas. These are only a few of the seductive scents swirling through Lo do Marcos on any given day. While you can’t go wrong feasting at the taco and tostada stands all over town, or the thatch-roofed huts serving pescado zarandeado (fresh-caught fish, marinated and grilled) on the beach, there are a handful of restaurants you’ll want to consider as well. They include:
- Rooster Wings at Endless Summer Sports Bar & Grill (Luis Echeverria 3).
- Carolina’s legendary Chile Rellenos & Pozole (Francisco I Madero 7).
- Beachfront sunsets & Shrimp Empanadas at Olivia (Luis Echeverria Sn).
- Fish (beef or pork) Tacos at Taqueria Oscar (Town Square).
- Tomatina’s sublime Tuna Ceviche (Camino a Las Minitas 1953).
Where to Shop
Every Saturday through April (9am-2pm), Tianguis Lo de Marcos features 50+ local artists, farmers, and cooks selling 100% organic, naturally handmade goods (Luis Escheverria 9). Clarita’s is a lovely mini mall the rest of the week, with a coffee shop in the back (Luis Escheverria 55).
Can’t-Miss Annual Events
Taste of Lo de Marcos is an annual food and drink festival every February or March. The city’s Patron Saint Festival follows shortly after, bustling with live music, comedy, dance, and parades, April 17-25th.
