Fiery sunsets, towering Sierra Madre vistas, year-round warm weather, no end of outdoor fun, and inspiring art in every direction – our peaceful city on Banderas Bay is known for a great many things. Of all these, the latter is perhaps the most mysterious. It doesn’t take a tour of Puerto Vallarta to properly soak in the sunset or frolic on the beach, but your appreciation is sure to be enriched by hearing the stories behind the 12+ bronze sculptures lining the seaside Malecón. That’s exactly what Gary Thompson provides every Tuesday morning through season. As owner of the renowned Galeria Pacifico, he has more than 30 years of first-hand knowledge about each piece. In fact, you might even meet an artist or two!
A Mile-long Open-Air Gallery
Think of the Malecón as a art space in and of itself, from the performers to the passersby, and of course, the sculptures. Each piece is meant to interact with the others, to enrich the waterfront boardwalk for generations to come. As the tour proceeds, don’t be afraid to touch, climb, and pose with your favorites, such as:
The Millennia
Mathis Lidice
Your journey begins with this spiraling depiction of Earthly evolution and human development in the shape of DNA.
The Roundabout of the Sea
Alejandro Colunga
Eight surreal chairs offer an artful place to rest along the way, each unique in its otherworldly abstraction.
Searching for Reason
Sergio Bustamante
Join these pillow-headed creatures as they hopelessly climb a ladder 60 feet into the sky over Banderas Bay.
The Boy on the Seahorse
Rafael Zamarripa
No sculpture is more iconic to PV than this 40-year-old mascot.
